Ruffle Brim Bucket Hat

This hat is the cutest one I have created yet! Before I got to the brim of this hat, I knew that since it was black it needed a little extra ✨spice✨. Therefore, I got inspired to create a ruffle edge to give the hat character and be more flattering.

Materials I Used

  • 1 skein of Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Yarn in black

  • H - 5.0 mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle to weave in loose ends

  • Scissors

  • Stitch marker (I use safety pins)

Abbreviations

sc: single crochet

sl st: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

ch: chain

Pattern Notes

This hat is worked from the crown to the brim in a spiral and begins with a magic loop. Each row of the increase rounds that create the body of the hat should end with 2 sc being worked in the last st. If not, recount your stitches and determine where you may have made a mistake or miscounted.

Instructions

Begin by creating a magic loop (or ch 4, sl st into the first ch to make a loop). I highly suggest learning the magic loop technique to ensure you do not have a big hole on top of the hat.

I learned how to crochet a magic circle from MJ Carlos on YouTube, it is explained so clearly how to create the circle and how to make the single crochet stitches in the loop yet not too long of a video.

Round 1: Crochet 6 sc in magic loop, then pull the loop tightly closed. Mark the first st in your round with a stitch marker.

Round 2: 2 sc in each st all the way around. (You should have 12 sts at the end of this round)

Round 3: [1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (18 sts)

Round 4: [1 sc in each st for the next 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (24 sts)

Round 5: [1 sc in each st for the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (30 sts)

Round 6: [1 sc in each st for the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (36 sts)

Round 7: [1 sc in each st for the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (42 sts)

Round 8: [1 sc in each st for the next 6 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (48 sts)

Round 9: [1 sc in each st for the next 7 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (54 sts)

Round 10: [1 sc in each st for the next 8 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (60 sts)

Round 11: [1 sc in each st for the next 9 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (66 sts)

Round 12: [1 sc in each st for the next 10 sts, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. (72 sts)

For a larger hat in circumference, add extra increase rows around according to what size you desire. After you reach the desired width, crochet 1 sc in every st around until the hat measures the desired height.

Provided is a size chart for hats, keep in mind that the height of the hat includes the brim:

Size Circumference Height

Small 18-20 in. 6.5-7 in.

Medium 20-22 in. 7-8 in.

Large 22-24.5 in. 8-10 in.

Brim

After reaching your desired height, we will create the ruffled effect on the brim of this hat by making increase stitches accordingly:

Round 1: [2 sc in the next st, sc in each st for the next 3 sts] repeat around.

Round 2: [2 sc in the next st, sc in each st for the next 4 sts] repeat around.

Round 3: [2 sc in the next st, sc in each st for the next 5 sts] repeat around.

Round 4: [2 sc in the next st, sc in each st for the next 6 sts] repeat around.

Round 5: [2 sc in the next st, sc in each st for the next 7 sts] repeat around.

Round 6: 1 sc in every st around.

Finishing

Sl st into the next 3 sts, cut yarn, and weave in the loose end with yarn needle.

This pattern was perfect for a hat to donate to Knots of Love since it is solid with no holes. I was excited to donate this hat because I enjoy the thought of someone else receiving this trendy bucket hat that would match with most outfits. Using the Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn made this hat lightweight and not too hot to wear at all times. One skein of this yarn is enough to make a hat perfectly with a little to spare. Happy hooking and if you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me!
